MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My philosophy emphasizes the belief that there is a musical solution to any problem, meaning that I like to focus on musicality and phrasing. The path I teach is paved with fundamentals and techniques for the trumpet or any instrument. As an educator, I like to teach in a way that makes the student feel inspired to improve upon their own musical ability, which I can accomplish by demonstrating so they can use my actions as an example. Another one of my core philosophies is that to love music one needs to listen to it. A common aspect among my teachers, past and present, is how much music they listen to. I get recommendations all the time from my teachers about music I should check out and artists I should know. All of that different music inspires my playing, a lesson I want to pass on to my students. So much of music is about learning from your mistakes and moving forward, another key concept that I stress to my pupils. Music is more than just the notes on the page; there are so many concepts that can inform how students conduct their lives and relationships with the people around them. They learn how to work with other people towards a common goal and really understand what it means to be part of something larger.
